چکیده

In order to determine the boron isotopic fractionation factor between boron adsorbed onto kaolin clay and boron in solution (S), as a first attempt, a break-through column chromatography at a high pressure (12.0 MPa) was performed. A boric acid standard solution (9.25 mmol/l, NIST SRM 951) was fed into a stainless steel column packed with boron-free kaolin clay with the flow rate of 0.8 ml/h. The S value obtained at 293 K was 1.0023, indicating that the lighter isotope (10B) was preferentially enriched into the clay. The magnitude of the S was apparently smaller than the previously reported values obtained by the batch method with seawater boron at atmospheric pressure. Besides the effect of pH and the influence of coexisting ions that would lead to a larger S value, as an aspect, dependence of pressure on the boron isotopic fractionation was a possible candidate reducing the S value. Assuming an occurrence of the molecular volume isotope effect (MVIE) on boron species, the S value would decrease with increasing pressure.

Boron isotope geochemistry during diagenesis. Part I. Experimental determination of fractionation during illitization of smectite

Experiments were performed to measure the isotopic fractionation of boron between illite/smectite (I/S) clay minerals and water as a function of temperature (300° and 350°C) and degree of illitization. Corresponding changes in the oxygen isotopes were monitored as an indication of the approach to equilibrium. The kinetics of the B-isotope exchange follows the mineralogical restructuring of smec...

Boron isotope geochemistry during diagenesis. Part II. Applications to organic-rich sediments

The measured clay-water isotope fractionation for boron was applied to natural organic-rich sediments undergoing illitization. Two field areas were chosen that show illitization occurring over a range of temperatures (80–500°C). Samples representing diagenetic temperatures of illitization (80–200°C) are from the Gulf of Mexico sedimentary basin at 4 to 6-km depth in the Eocene Wilcox Fm and Jur...

Boron isotope geochemistry as a tracer for the evolution of brines and associated hot springs from the Dead Sea, Israel

A boron isotope study combined with analyses of elemental boron, lithium, and chlorine is used to suggest that brines from the Dead Sea and on-shore hypersaline thermal springs (Hamme Yesha, Hamme Zohar, and Hamme Mazor) are the products of interaction of evaporated seawater with detrital sediments. The high 6”B values of the Dead Sea brines (55.7 to 57.4%0 versus NBS-951) and the hot springs (...

Chemical diffusivity of boron in melts of haplogranitic composition

A~~~-~erni~ Asiatic of B in synthetic melts of hapl~~tic composition have been measured by the diffusion couple technique at 1 atm between 1200-1600°C. The compositional profiles were measured by ion microprobe and modelled using the Boltzmann-Matano formalism to retrieve compositionally dependent interdiffision coefficients. At the experimental conditions, &OS is found to exchange primarily wi...
